What ABS does
ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) prevents the wheels from locking up during heavy braking. Without ABS, locking the wheels causes the car to skid and the driver loses steering control. ABS allows you to steer while braking hard, which can be critical in an emergency stop.
What happens when ABS has a fault
When the ABS light is on, the ABS system has disabled itself. Your brakes will still work. You can still stop the car. However, in a situation where you need to brake very hard (for example, a child running into the road), the wheels may lock and you may lose steering control. The stopping distance in normal conditions is unaffected, but the safety margin in emergency situations is reduced.
Is it safe to drive with the ABS light on
You can drive to a garage to get it diagnosed and repaired. It is not an immediate emergency in dry conditions. However, it is an MOT failure item and should be repaired promptly. In wet or icy conditions the lack of ABS increases risk significantly.
Common causes of ABS faults
- Wheel speed sensor failure or damaged sensor wiring (the most common cause)
- Faulty ABS pump or module
- Low brake fluid level
- Contaminated brake fluid
