Knowing when your M.O.T. expires is one of those small things that’s easy to forget, until the day you realise it ran out last week. Driving without a valid M.O.T. is illegal, can invalidate your insurance, and racks up penalty points on your licence. The good news: checking is quick, free, and takes under a minute.
The fastest way to check
The official government tool at gov.uk lets you check any U.K. vehicle’s M.O.T. expiry by registration number. Just type in your reg, and you’ll see your expiry date along with your full M.O.T. history: every test, every result, every advisory.
Or, even faster, type your reg into our homepage M.O.T. checker, and you’ll get the same data instantly, plus the option to book your next test in one click if it’s coming up soon.
When can I book my next M.O.T.?
Your M.O.T. can be booked up to one calendar month minus a day before the current one expires, and the new expiry date will still be set for one year after the original. So if your M.O.T. runs out on 15 November, you can book any time from 16 October onwards without losing any time.
What if it’s already expired?
If your M.O.T. has expired, you can only legally drive your car to a pre-booked M.O.T. test. Anything else, and you risk a £1,000 fine. Get it booked in straight away. Most garages, including ours, can usually fit you in within a few days.
Common reasons cars fail their M.O.T.
- Lights and signalling: usually a blown bulb. The single most common failure.
- Suspension: worn bushes, ball joints, dampers.
- Brakes: pads, discs, fluid levels.
- Tyres: tread depth below 1.6mm, sidewall damage.
- Exhaust emissions: usually fixable with a diagnostic + repair.
Many of these are quick to fix and cheap. Booking a service alongside your M.O.T. (we do an M.O.T. + Interim Service combo for £199) catches most issues before they become failures.
