Most garages offer two types of car service: interim and full. Knowing which one you need saves money and means your car gets what it actually requires.
What is an interim service
An interim service is a lighter, more frequent check designed for higher-mileage drivers. It covers the essentials: oil and filter change, fluid top-ups, tyre condition and pressure, battery check, brakes, lights, and a visual inspection of key components. Typically recommended every 6 months or 6,000 miles, whichever comes first.
What is a full service
A full service is the comprehensive annual inspection. In addition to everything in an interim service, it adds: spark plug replacement (petrol engines); air filter and cabin filter replacement; full brake inspection including disc thickness measurement; suspension and steering joint inspection; fuel filter check; exhaust system inspection; drive belt condition check; and a full diagnostic scan for stored fault codes.
A full service typically takes 2 to 3 hours and is recommended every 12 months or 12,000 miles.
Which one do you need
If you have had a full service in the last 12 months and cover high mileage, book an interim at the halfway point. If it has been more than 12 months since your last service, book a full service. If you have recently bought a used car and are unsure of its service history, a full service is the right starting point.
Does servicing affect your warranty
Under UK block exemption regulations, you can have your car serviced at any competent independent garage provided the work is carried out to the manufacturer schedule and the correct parts and oils are used. We use manufacturer-approved oils and keep full service records, so your warranty is not affected.
Our interim service starts from £144 + VAT and our full service from £199 + VAT. Book online or call 0131 554 3423.
