The car battery provides the electrical power to start the engine and supports the electrical system when the alternator is not running at full output. Most batteries have a lifespan of 3 to 5 years, though this varies with usage patterns and vehicle type.
Signs of a failing battery
- Slow engine cranking: The engine turns over more slowly than usual when you start it, particularly on cold mornings.
- Clicking but not starting: A rapid clicking sound when you turn the key usually means the battery does not have enough charge to turn the starter motor.
- Dashboard warning lights: Some cars show a battery warning when the battery is weak.
- Frequent need to jump start: If you have needed to jump start the car more than once in a few months, the battery is likely failing.
- Age: A battery over 5 years old that has not been tested is a candidate for replacement regardless of symptoms.
Why cold weather causes problems
Cold temperatures reduce the chemical efficiency of a battery, meaning it delivers less power at the point you need it most. A battery that manages fine in summer can fail to start the car on a cold January morning. Cold weather does not kill batteries: it reveals batteries that are already weakened.
Stop-start vehicles
Cars with stop-start systems (where the engine cuts out at red lights) require a more robust battery type called an AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) battery. Fitting a standard battery to a stop-start vehicle will result in premature battery failure. Replacement must use the correct AGM type.
Battery testing
We carry out battery condition tests as part of every service and as a standalone check. A good battery test takes less than 5 minutes and shows both the current state of charge and the battery health (its ability to deliver power under load). Call us on 0131 554 3423 or contact us here.
