A car service is not a single fixed thing. The work carried out depends on whether you are booking an interim or full service, your car mileage and age, and the manufacturer recommended service schedule. Here is a clear breakdown.
What every service includes
Whether interim or full, every service at Steins Garage includes: engine oil drain and refill with the correct grade oil for your vehicle; oil filter replacement; check and top up of all fluid levels (coolant, brake fluid, power steering fluid, windscreen washer fluid); tyre tread depth and pressure check across all four tyres; visual brake inspection; battery condition check; lights check; horn check; visual inspection of belts, hoses and pipes under the bonnet; and visual inspection of the exhaust system.
What a full service adds
A full service also includes: air filter replacement; cabin (pollen) filter replacement; spark plugs (petrol engines, based on manufacturer schedule); fuel filter check; detailed brake inspection including measurement of disc thickness; steering and suspension component inspection; full diagnostic scan for fault codes stored in the ECU; drive belt condition check; and detailed visual inspection of bodywork and underside.
What a service does not include
A standard service does not include repairs to components found to be worn or failed. If we identify that brake pads need replacing, for example, we will tell you, give you a price, and ask for your approval before doing anything. We never carry out work beyond the service without your agreement.
Service history and records
After every service we stamp your service book (physical or digital) and provide a written record of all work carried out, fluids used, and any advisory items noted.
How often should you service your car
The standard guide is a full service every 12 months or 12,000 miles. Our interim service starts from £144 + VAT and our full service from £199 + VAT. All prices exclude VAT. Book online or call us on 0131 554 3423.
