What actually happens during an MOT test

Mechanic inspecting a car on a ramp during an MOT test

The MOT test is one of those things most drivers know they need but few fully understand. Here is a plain-language guide to what actually happens from the moment you drop your car off.

Who carries out the test

MOT tests are carried out by DVSA-approved testers at authorised testing stations. At Steins Garage we have been an authorised MOT testing station for many years. The tester must follow strict DVSA guidelines and cannot pass or fail a vehicle on personal judgement. Every decision is governed by published standards.

How long does an MOT take

A standard Class 4 MOT (covering cars, small vans and some larger vehicles) typically takes between 45 minutes and one hour. If your car has issues that require investigation or re-testing, it will take longer. We recommend planning for an hour minimum when you book.

What the tester checks

The MOT covers over 60 individual checks including: lights (headlights, brake lights, indicators, fog lights and number plate lights); tyres (tread depth must meet the legal minimum of 1.6mm); brakes (tested on a rolling brake tester); steering and suspension; seatbelts; horn; wipers and washers; windscreen (any chip larger than 10mm in the driver direct line of sight is a failure); exhaust emissions; vehicle structure; and number plates.

What the MOT does not check

The MOT is a point-in-time safety check, not a full mechanical inspection. It does not check the engine internals, clutch operation, gearbox, air conditioning, or general wear items like oil level. Those are covered by a service. Passing an MOT does not mean your car has no mechanical issues.

Pass, fail and advisories

Pass means the vehicle meets all legal safety requirements as of today. An advisory is an item not yet at failure level but approaching it. A fail means one or more items do not meet the required standard. The vehicle cannot be legally driven (except directly to a pre-booked garage for repairs) until the faults are fixed and a retest is passed.

At Steins Garage we explain every result clearly before you collect your car. If your car fails, we will give you a written list of the faults, a quote to fix them, and the option to have the work done the same day where possible.
