What to check when viewing a used car

Viewing used BMW car before purchase

Buying a used car privately is one of the riskiest purchases most people make. A methodical inspection takes around 45 minutes and can save you thousands. Here is what to check.

Before you arrive

Run a free MOT history check at check-mot.service.gov.uk and at minimum a basic free vehicle check to confirm the car is not reported stolen or a SORN. Arrange to view the car at the seller address listed on the V5C. Viewing at a neutral location is a red flag.

Body and exterior

Walk around the car and look along each panel from a low angle in good light. Look for: ripples or waves in the metal that suggest filler repair; paint that does not match between panels (open the doors and look at the door shut edges); misaligned panel gaps; replacement or re-sprayed panels. Check all glass for chips and cracks, and all lights for fogging, cracks or moisture inside.

Engine and fluids

Check the engine oil on the dipstick. It should be between the min and max marks and not black and thick. Check the coolant reservoir for correct level and correct colour. Look for any visible oil leaks on the engine surface or under the car. Check the condition of hoses and belts.

Interior

Test every button, switch and control: windows, mirrors, air conditioning, heated seats, all lights on the dashboard. Check the odometer against the service history and MOT records. A mismatch is a serious flag for clocking.

Test drive

Drive it cold from a cold start if possible. Listen for: rattles from the engine on startup; any knocking or rumbling under the bonnet; clunking or grinding when turning at low speed (CV joints); pulling to one side under braking; vibration through the steering wheel; gear changes that are stiff, notchy or jump out of gear.

Documents to check

V5C logbook (make sure the seller name and address match); service history (stamps or digital records); any MOT certificates. Check the VIN on the V5C matches the plate on the dashboard and the VIN stamped on the bodywork (usually in the engine bay).

If the car passes all your checks but you want professional mechanical confirmation, book a pre-purchase inspection with Steins Garage. Call 0131 554 3423 or contact us here.
